Research Trips

On an typical week we spend a couple of days training divers in identification methods, you can even earn a PADI Speciality (Manta Diver Speciality) by learning about mantas and applying the ID method to practice! Once everyone has had a couple of practice dives to observe and record mantas we try to schedule a day to capture data for an extended period of between 6 and 11 hours (depending on manta activity and what data we are trying to capture). These days provide wonderful opportunities for photographers to get good manta photos as we tend to dive in small groups (4-6 divers) and each group has at least 3 hours worth of manta diving each day. Check out my Photo Gallery to see some of my best pictures that were taken on research days.

Current research is also looking into pregnancy rates in females and social interactions.

In addition to planned research we make the most of opportunities to dive and snorkel with mantas to observe special behaviours which cannot be anticipated. We dived with over 150 mantas during. We are always discovering new dive sites and love diving with sharks and other species of rays so it is not just about mantas!
